  • May 1888
    Opened in Noboricho, Kumamoto City as a Seiseiko School-affiliated Girls’ School. Founded by Tomofusa Sassa et al, with the first principal Gijuro Naito and 23 students.
  • May 1889
    The lyrics “Hirakeyuku Manabi no Mado no Hanazakura Yo ni Niofubeki Haru wo Kosomate” were bestowed upon the school by Empress Dowager Shoken to encourage girls’ education.
  • October 1891
    Became independent from Seiseiko School and was renamed Shokei Girls’ School
  • April 1896
    Was renamed the Private Shokei Senior Girls’ School
  • May 1912
    Established the Incorporated Shokei Foundation
  • November 1920
    Moved to Kuhonji, Oe Village, Hotaku District (present location)
  • November 1931
    Received a visit from the Emperor as a representative girls’ school of the prefecture
  • April 1947
    Inauguration of Shoken Middle School through reforms of the education system
  • April 1948
    Became Shokei Senior High School under the new education system
  • March 1951
    The previous Incorporated Shokei Foundation was reorganized into the Shokei Educational Institution
  • April 1952
    Opened Kumamoto Girls’ Junior College and set up the Home Economics Department.
  • April 1967
    Kumamoto Girls’ Junior College’s Home Economics Department was divided into the Home Economics Major and the Food and Nutrition Major.
  • April 1968
    The Childhood Education Course of Kumamoto Girls’ Junior College was setup in the Shimizu school grounds (present location).
  • April 1969
    Opened the Kumamoto Girls’ Junior College-attached kindergarten
  • April 1975
    Opened Shokei University and set up the Faculty of Literature (Japanese Department and English Department).
    Kumamoto Girls’ Junior College was renamed Shokei Junior College, and the attached kindergarten became the Shokei Junior College-attached Kindergarten
  • January 1986
    Emperor Showa bestowed upon the school the poem “Hanashinobu no Uta Shimijimi Kikite Seitora no Kokoro wa Hana no Gotoku Are to Inoru”.
  • May 1988
    Performed ceremony to commemorate the 100th year anniversary since the Shokei Educational Institution
  • April 1996
    Set up the Shokei Junior College Food and Nutrition Major
  • April 2006
    SSet up the Shokei College Faculty of Human Life Science, Department of Nutritional Science. The Japanese and English departments of the Faculty of Literature were reorganized into the Faculty of Culture and Language, Department of Culture and Language.
    Shokei Junior College was renamed Shokei University Junior College, and the Childhood Education Course was renamed the Department of Childhood Education
    The Home Economics Department was reorganized into the Department of Integrated Career Studies and the Department of Food and Nutrition

    Faculty Exchange Agreement formed between the Faculty of Culture and Language and Taiwan’s Tzu Chi University, Department of Oriental Language and Literature
  • May 2013
    Performed ceremony to commemorate the 125th year anniversary since the founding of Shokei Educational Institution
  • June 2014
    University Exchange Agreement formed between Shokei University and Taiwan’s Tzu Chi University
  • June 2014
    University Exchange Agreement formed between Shokei University and South Korea’s Induk University
  • April 2016
    The Shokei University Junior College-attached Kindergarten is changed to a Kindergarten and Childcare Center Authorized Institution
  • December 2017
    University Exchange Agreement formed between Shokei University Junior College and Taiwan’s Tzu Chi University
  • March 2018
    University Exchange Agreement formed between Shokei University Junior College and South Korea’s Induk University
