School Philosophy

Cultivating Women who can Contribute to Society with Wisdom and Virtue

The origin of Shokei Gakuen is the Girl’s School Attached to Seiseiko, which was established in 1888(Year 21 of the Meji Era). In the “Statement of Establishment of Girl’s School Attached to Seiseiko”, left by the founder Tomofusa Sassa and his comrades on the occasion of the school’s establishment, such things as the demand for and ideals of girls’ education are described in detail. Shokei Gakuen’s school philosophy was created by summarizing the parts of the statement which discussed school philosophy.

Educational Principles

Shokei (尚絅) – Endeavoring for Inner Fulfillment Without Richly Dressing oneself

Our institution regards the school name Shokei, expressed by the two Chinese characters 尚絅, as symbolizing the ideal education and its principles. The name Shokei (尚絅) is derived from the phrase “ Ikin Shokei (衣錦尚絅) ” in the passage of the Chinese classic Chuyo. The phrase means that when a woman wears a brocade, she should wear something thin over it and not have gorgeous patterns showing on the outside. Chuyo employs the phrase metaphorically and advocates the proper way for a manof virtue to live his life. The phrase also implies one’s attitude of mind and way of living, which demands great effort to attain inner fulfillment without richly dressing oneself.
